Apple Confirms iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Bug Fix Is Coming After Unexpected Restarts

Apple is preparing a software update to fix a Face ID-related bug affecting some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users. The issue can cause the phone to freeze and unexpectedly restart after a failed Face ID authentication attempt.

Face ID Failure Can Trigger a Reboot

Reports began appearing shortly after the iPhone 18 Pro models launched. In affected cases, Face ID can fail while authenticating inside apps, including protected apps such as Passwords. The iPhone may then become unresponsive before restarting a few seconds later.

The problem does not appear to affect every iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max. 9to5Mac reported that it was able to reproduce the behavior on an iPhone 18 Pro, indicating that the problem is likely related to software rather than a widespread hardware defect.

Apple Confirms a Software Fix

Apple has confirmed that it is working on an iOS update designed to address the problem. According to 9to5Mac, the update is expected to arrive early next week, although Apple has not publicly confirmed the exact iOS version that will contain the fix.

The reports are particularly notable because the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max use a redesigned Face ID system. Apple moved the infrared camera beneath the display as part of the changes that allow for a smaller Dynamic Island.

There is currently no indication that the redesigned Face ID hardware itself is defective. The issue appears to be associated with how iOS handles certain failed Face ID authentication attempts.

What Should iPhone 18 Pro Owners Do?

If your iPhone 18 Pro is experiencing this particular problem, keeping the device updated is the most important step. Apple recommends updating to the latest version of iOS when troubleshooting Face ID problems. Until Apple's fix arrives, users who experience repeated Face ID failures can use their passcode instead of repeatedly attempting Face ID authentication.

If the iPhone becomes completely unresponsive, a force restart can restore normal operation.

A Fix Should Arrive Soon

The Face ID reboot issue adds to the early software problems reported following the iPhone 18 Pro launch. However, Apple's confirmation that a software update is being prepared suggests affected owners should look for an upcoming iOS update rather than immediately assuming their device has a hardware defect.

Apple has not yet provided a specific release date or confirmed the final version number for the update. Once the patch becomes available, iPhone 18 Pro owners should install it through Settings > General > Software Update.
