Apple iPhone Duo: Full Specs, Features, Price and What to Expect

Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, introducing a new form factor that combines the portability of an iPhone with a much larger display when opened. The device was announced alongside Apple's latest iPhone lineup and represents one of the company's biggest changes to the iPhone design in years.

A New Foldable iPhone Design

The iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design with an outer display for everyday use and a larger inner display that becomes available when the phone is opened.

Apple has built the device around a titanium enclosure and a hinge designed with more than 100 components. The company says the hinge is engineered to provide controlled opening and closing while helping support the center of the folding display.

The inner display also features a specialized protective structure designed to withstand everyday use. Apple says its custom materials and construction are designed to reduce stress around the folding area. The device has an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance, while Ceramic Shield 2 protects the front display.

Large Display, Smaller Footprint

One of the biggest attractions of the iPhone Duo is its ability to transform from a conventional smartphone into a larger-screen device. When opened, the larger display gives users more room for multitasking, watching videos, browsing the web and working with multiple applications.

Apple has also redesigned iOS 27 to take advantage of the foldable form factor. Controls can move to the sides of the interface, while the system automatically adapts content as the device opens, closes or changes orientation.

iOS 27 Gets a Foldable-Friendly Interface

The iPhone Duo isn't simply an existing iPhone placed inside a folding body.

Apple has customized iOS 27 specifically for the device. When the phone is opened, users can access two Home Screen pages alongside a customizable Today View.

The larger screen also enables new multitasking features. Users can run two applications side by side, open two windows from the same application and save combinations of apps for quick access later.

Apple says third-party developers can also take advantage of new APIs designed for the iPhone Duo. Apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are among those already being adapted for the foldable experience.

Powered by Apple's A20 Pro Chip

Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Apple says the six-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the previous-generation A19 Pro, while the seven-core GPU delivers up to 40 percent faster and more power-efficient graphics performance.

The A20 Pro also includes a new dual 16-core Neural Engine designed for demanding on-device AI workloads. Apple says the chip provides twice the compute power for on-device AI models.

The iPhone Duo also uses an advanced thermal-management system with a custom vapor chamber. Apple says this allows the device to maintain performance during demanding activities such as gaming, multitasking and AI processing.

48MP Camera System

Despite its folding design, Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with a capable camera system.

The main camera is a 48MP Fusion camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization, computational photography improvements and an optical-quality 2x Telephoto option.

The phone also features a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, allowing users to capture wider scenes and macro photographs. Apple has introduced several camera features specifically designed around the foldable design.

Smart Take

Smart Take uses on-device AI to analyze a scene and automatically capture an image when subjects are ready, helping users avoid missing a photograph while setting up a shot.

Duo Preview

Duo Preview uses the external display to show a live camera preview, allowing subjects to see the framing while someone else takes the photograph.

Rear-Camera Selfies

Because the outer display can show the camera preview, users can use the higher-resolution rear cameras for selfies while viewing the composition on the external screen. The iPhone Duo can also record 4K video at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision using the main camera.

Battery Life Designed for a Foldable

Apple has placed a battery on each side of the foldable design to maximize available internal space.

According to Apple, the iPhone Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display.

Apple also says the device can reach 50 percent charge in around 20 minutes using fast charging, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes with compatible MagSafe or Qi2 chargers.

Touch ID Returns

Another notable change is biometric authentication. Instead of relying on Face ID, the iPhone Duo integrates Touch ID into the side button. Apple says this allows users to authenticate whether the device is open or closed.

The phone also includes Camera Control for quickly launching the camera and accessing camera-related features.

Apple Intelligence Comes to the Foldable iPhone

The larger display is also designed around Apple's latest AI features.

Users can interact with Siri AI while viewing other content on the opposite side of the display. Apple Intelligence features can also help with photo editing, image generation and other tasks.

Apple says much of its AI processing takes place on-device, while Private Cloud Compute is used for more demanding requests while maintaining Apple's privacy approach.

Price and Availability

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, placing it firmly in Apple's premium smartphone category. Reuters reported that higher-capacity configurations can reach $3,199.

Apple is positioning the device as a new category of iPhone rather than simply another variation of its conventional models.

Final Thoughts

The iPhone Duo is Apple's biggest iPhone design change in years, combining a traditional smartphone experience with a larger foldable display. Its titanium construction, A20 Pro processor, 48MP camera system, redesigned iOS 27 interface and foldable-specific multitasking features make it significantly different from Apple's conventional iPhone models.

The biggest question for buyers will be whether the additional flexibility of a foldable display justifies the device's premium price. With the iPhone Duo, Apple is betting that users will want an iPhone that can transform from a compact smartphone into a much larger productivity and entertainment device.
