Apple’s Next Operating System Could Transform the Smart Home
John

Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce an entirely new operating system designed for its long-rumored smart home hub. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the platform will combine elements of iOS, tvOS, and watchOS and could eventually be called homeOS.
A New Operating System for Apple’s Smart Home
The new software is expected to power an upcoming Apple smart home device that combines a HomePod-style speaker with a square display measuring around 6 or 7 inches.
Rather than simply adapting iOS or another existing Apple platform, the new system is reportedly being developed specifically for the home. Its interface could feature a grid of app icons, widgets, and customizable clock faces, borrowing design ideas from Apple’s existing operating systems.
Apple has not yet confirmed the name of the platform, but homeOS has been linked to trademark activity associated with a company believed to be connected to Apple.
Siri AI Could Be at the Center
Siri AI is expected to play a major role in the new platform. Apple recently began rolling out its next-generation Siri AI across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, bringing features such as personal context understanding, richer conversations, onscreen awareness, and expanded systemwide actions.
On the rumored home hub, Siri AI could become the primary way users interact with the device, allowing it to control smart-home accessories and provide personalized information.
Personalized Experience With Face Recognition
One of the more ambitious reported features is built-in facial recognition. The smart home hub could identify the person looking at its screen and automatically display personalized information.
The interface could also adjust depending on how close the user is to the device, with elements becoming larger or smaller as the person approaches or moves away.
Apps and Smart Home Features
The new platform is reportedly being designed to support several Apple apps and home-focused features.
Potential apps and functions include:
Apple Music
Apple Podcasts
Apple News
Calendar
Camera
Notes
Reminders
FaceTime
HomeKit controls
Home security monitoring
Photo galleries
Music playback
A dedicated Siri app for AI conversations
The system is also expected to support multiple users, allowing different members of a household to receive personalized content.
When Could Apple Announce It?
Apple could unveil the new smart home platform and its accompanying hub as soon as October 2026, according to the latest reporting. However, October should be viewed as a reported timeframe rather than a confirmed Apple launch date. The device could potentially be delayed into early 2027.
For now, Apple has not publicly announced the rumored smart home hub, the new operating system, or the homeOS name.
What This Means for Apple’s Smart Home Strategy
If the reports are accurate, the new operating system would give Apple a dedicated software platform for smart-home products rather than relying primarily on existing platforms such as iOS and tvOS.
The combination of a dedicated display, Siri AI, personalized experiences, and HomeKit controls could position the rumored device as a central interface for Apple’s smart-home ecosystem. The exact hardware, software name, pricing, and release date remain unconfirmed.
