iPhone Duo Owners Report Cracked Screens Near the Hinge

Apple’s newly launched foldable iPhone Duo is facing early durability concerns after some owners reported cracks appearing along the inner display’s hinge. Photos shared on Reddit and Apple-focused forums show similar damage patterns, including cracks near the central fold and bright lines of pixels across the screen.

The reports began emerging shortly after the iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23. Although the number of affected devices remains unclear, the consistency of the reported damage has raised questions about the durability of Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

Some Displays Reportedly Cracked After Fewer Than 20 Folds

One owner in Australia reported that their iPhone Duo developed a cracked inner display after approximately six hours of ownership and fewer than 20 openings.

According to the account reported by MacRumors, the owner felt something near the internal hinge while opening the phone and then heard a cracking sound. The display broke along the hinge despite no obvious external marks or visible damage beforehand. The owner subsequently visited an Apple Store and received a replacement device.

Other images circulating online appear to show similar damage near the folding area. However, the history of some devices shown in these images is unknown, and it has not been established whether every case resulted from a manufacturing or mechanical defect.

Hinge Mechanism Could Be a Factor

One of the most notable aspects of the reports is the location of the damage. Several affected displays appear to have cracks running along the central hinge, sometimes accompanied by a bright white line or a band of malfunctioning pixels. A possible explanation emerged after a durability test and teardown by a YouTuber identified as CuriousHagi. The examination reportedly found a damaged hinge component that may have contributed to the display failure.

The findings suggest that a mechanical issue could potentially place pressure on the inner screen. However, this remains a suspected explanation rather than a confirmed diagnosis of the reported failures. Apple has not publicly confirmed a widespread hinge defect or announced a recall related to the reports.

How Widespread Is the Problem?

It is too early to determine whether the cracked displays indicate a broader hardware problem or a limited number of defective devices. The reports come from early buyers, and images shared online do not establish how frequently the issue occurs across all iPhone Duo units. Some reviewers have also tested the device’s folding mechanism without experiencing the same type of failure.

More information will be needed from verified repair cases, warranty claims, and Apple’s own investigation to establish whether the incidents share a common cause. Until then, the reports should be treated as an early warning rather than proof that the iPhone Duo has a widespread design flaw.

What Should iPhone Duo Owners Do?

Owners who notice a crack, unusual bright lines, or other display problems should avoid repeatedly folding or pressing the affected area. They should document the damage and contact Apple Support or an Apple Store for an inspection.

Apple’s standard limited warranty generally covers manufacturing defects, while accidental damage may be subject to separate repair charges. Whether a particular hinge or display failure qualifies for warranty service will depend on Apple’s assessment of the device. Owners should avoid attempting to repair the hinge or inner display themselves, as doing so could cause further damage.

What Comes Next for Apple?

The reports put additional attention on the engineering challenges involved in building a foldable smartphone. Unlike conventional phones, foldable devices rely on a moving hinge and a flexible inner display, making mechanical design and long-term durability especially important.

For Apple, the priority will be determining whether the reported failures share a common cause and whether any corrective action is necessary. For now, there is no confirmed evidence establishing the overall failure rate or proving that all iPhone Duo models are affected. More verified cases and an official response from Apple will be needed to clarify the situation.
