AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: Key Differences You Need to Know
John

Apple has officially introduced AirPods 5, bringing a new generation of its open-ear wireless earbuds with improved audio, stronger Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), enhanced durability and deeper integration with Siri and Apple's latest software.
The new AirPods 5 retain the familiar open-ear design of the AirPods 4, but Apple has made several changes under the hood. The biggest upgrade is ANC: Apple says AirPods 5 can block up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.
So, how different are AirPods 5 from AirPods 4, and is the newer model worth considering?

Design: Familiar AirPods Feel
At first glance, AirPods 5 don't look dramatically different from AirPods 4.
Both generations use Apple's open-ear design, rather than the silicone ear tips found on AirPods Pro. That makes them a different proposition from Apple's Pro models and can appeal to people who don't like a sealed ear-canal fit.
The earbuds themselves are also very similar in size. Apple lists both generations at 30.2mm tall, 18.3mm wide and 18.1mm deep, with each earbud weighing 4.3 grams.
The bigger physical change is durability. AirPods 4 are rated IP54, while AirPods 5 move to IP57, giving the newer earbuds stronger resistance against dust, sweat and water.
Audio: AirPods 5 Get a New Acoustic Architecture
Apple has redesigned the acoustic architecture inside AirPods 5.
The company says the new system delivers richer sound and works with next-generation Adaptive EQ to adjust the audio experience.
Both generations use Apple's H2 headphone chip, so AirPods 5 aren't simply getting a newer processor. Instead, Apple is combining the existing H2 platform with redesigned acoustic hardware and improved computational audio processing.
ANC Is the Biggest Upgrade
This is where the AirPods 5 make the clearest jump.
AirPods 4 were offered in two versions: a standard model and an AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation model. The ANC version added Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode and other noise-control features.
With AirPods 5, Apple has made ANC part of the standard experience. Apple says the new model provides up to 50% more noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC.
AirPods 5 also include a more natural Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio, which automatically blends ANC and Transparency depending on the environment.
For commuters, travelers and people who regularly use earbuds in noisy environments, this is one of the most important changes between the two generations.
AirPods 5 Add More Siri Features
AirPods 5 are also designed around Apple's newer AI ecosystem.
The earbuds support Siri Interactions, allowing users to respond to Siri prompts with a head nod or shake. Apple also lists Siri support and Live Translation among the available features, although compatibility depends on the connected Apple device, software version, language and region.
This becomes particularly interesting alongside Apple's latest iPhone software and Siri AI features.
Battery Life: A Complicated Difference
Battery life isn't a straightforward win for AirPods 5.
The standard AirPods 4 can provide up to five hours of listening on a single charge, while AirPods 4 with ANC provide up to four hours with ANC enabled. The AirPods 4 charging case can provide up to 30 hours of total listening time.
The standard AirPods 5 provide up to four hours with ANC enabled, with the case providing up to 20 hours with ANC enabled. The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case increase single-charge ANC listening to up to five hours.
That means buyers should pay close attention to which AirPods 5 model they choose.
Charging: More Options With AirPods 5
AirPods 4 with ANC already introduced a wireless charging case, while the standard AirPods 4 use a USB-C charging case.
AirPods 5 continue that approach, with a standard USB-C case and a Wireless Charging Case option. The wireless version supports USB-C, Apple Watch charging and Qi-certified chargers. It also includes a speaker for Find My.
The AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case also adds volume control through a swipe on the stem, giving users another way to adjust playback without reaching for their iPhone.
AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: Which One Should You Buy?
The answer depends largely on what you want from your earbuds.
AirPods 4 remain an option for buyers who want Apple's open-ear design and H2-powered features without necessarily paying for the newest generation. The standard AirPods 4 launched at $129, while AirPods 4 with ANC launched at $179.
AirPods 5 introduce ANC across the new lineup, a redesigned acoustic system, IP57 resistance, improved Transparency and additional Siri-related features. Apple's current U.S. pricing starts at $129, with the Wireless Charging Case version priced higher.
For someone buying a new pair, the main question is therefore less about the basic design and more about whether the newer ANC, durability, audio architecture and charging features matter to their everyday use.
The Bottom Line
AirPods 5 aren't a radical redesign. Instead, Apple has focused on improving the experience around its existing open-ear formula.
The biggest changes are stronger ANC, redesigned acoustics, IP57 durability, improved Transparency and additional Siri features.
AirPods 4 still offer the same H2 chip and many of Apple's core features, making the comparison more nuanced than a simple generational upgrade.
For existing AirPods 4 owners, the decision may come down to how much they value the improved noise cancellation and durability. For first-time buyers, the newer AirPods 5 provide Apple's latest open-ear feature set.
