Apple Watch Series 12 vs. Series 11: Key Differences and New Features

Apple’s latest smartwatch generation, the Apple Watch Series 12, brings a handful of hardware and software improvements over the Apple Watch Series 11. While the overall design remains familiar, Apple has upgraded the processor, display technology, health-sensing capabilities and AI features.

For anyone considering a new Apple Watch, the question is whether those changes make the Series 12 a worthwhile upgrade over the Series 11.

Apple Watch Series 12 vs. Series 11: Key Differences

The Series 12 and Series 11 share the same basic Apple Watch experience, including an always-on display, health and fitness tracking, notifications, cellular connectivity options and support for Apple's latest watchOS features.

The biggest differences are found inside the newer model.

A Faster S11 Chip

One of the most notable changes in the Series 12 is Apple's move to the S11 chip. The new processor is designed to provide faster performance while supporting the latest watchOS features. For everyday tasks such as opening apps, checking notifications, tracking workouts and interacting with Siri, the difference may not be dramatic for Series 11 owners.

However, the newer processor gives the Series 12 more headroom for future software updates and new features.

A Newer Display

Apple has also updated the display technology. The Series 12 features an always-on wide-angle OLED display, while the Series 11 uses Apple's previous-generation display technology. Both models can reach up to 2,000 nits of brightness, making them suitable for viewing outdoors.

The newer display is particularly useful for people who frequently check their Apple Watch at different viewing angles or in bright environments.

More Health and Fitness Tracking

Health monitoring remains one of the main reasons people choose an Apple Watch, and Series 12 expands on the capabilities of its predecessor. Apple has added enhanced background heart-rate tracking and Recovery Heart Rate Variability (HRV) information. These features can provide users with additional data about how their body responds to activity and recovery.

The Series 12 continues to offer Apple's broader collection of health and fitness features, including heart-rate monitoring, ECG capabilities, workout tracking and activity measurements.

AI Comes to More Apple Watch Features

Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of Apple's product ecosystem, and the Series 12 continues that trend. The newer watch supports additional AI-powered capabilities, including Audio Intelligence features such as Live Rewind and Siri Recap. Some of these features are expected to roll out in beta and require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.

That means the Series 12's AI capabilities aren't completely independent of the iPhone. Users will need compatible Apple hardware and software to access certain features.

Battery Life Remains Similar

Despite the hardware improvements, Apple hasn't significantly increased the advertised battery life. Both Series 11 and Series 12 are rated for up to 24 hours of battery life, while Low Power Mode can extend usage to as much as 38 hours.

Fast charging is also an important part of the Apple Watch experience, allowing users to quickly add battery when needed. For Series 11 owners hoping for a major battery-life upgrade, the Series 12 therefore may not provide a compelling reason to upgrade on battery performance alone.

Design Changes Are Relatively Subtle

At first glance, the Series 12 doesn't represent a dramatic departure from the Series 11. Both generations are available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, and Apple continues to use the familiar Apple Watch design language.

The biggest changes are therefore beneath the surface, with improvements to the processor, display, health monitoring and software capabilities.

Should You Upgrade to Apple Watch Series 12?

For people buying their first Apple Watch, the Series 12 offers Apple's newest standard Apple Watch experience and the latest hardware generation.

For existing Series 11 owners, the decision is less straightforward. The S11 chip, updated display technology, additional health features and new AI capabilities are useful improvements, but battery life remains largely unchanged and the overall design is familiar.

If you already own a Series 11 and are happy with its performance, the Series 12's improvements may not be essential. However, users particularly interested in the newest health-tracking and AI features may find the newer model more appealing.

Apple Watch Series 12 vs. Series 11: The Bottom Line

The Apple Watch Series 12 is an evolution rather than a complete redesign. Apple has focused on improving the experience through a newer chip, updated display technology, expanded health tracking and additional AI-powered features. The Series 11 remains a capable smartwatch, while Series 12 is aimed at users who want Apple's latest hardware and software capabilities.

For shoppers choosing between the two, the biggest factors to consider are price, health features, display technology and access to the newest AI features rather than battery life or a major change in physical design.
